This book has now found a place in the (mileage) list of my favorite books.
It 'a nice book by Patrick Dennis (aka [Also Known As) the American writer Edward Everett Tanner III), of 1955 (at that time in America had great success coming in the top 10 bestseller books in that year) that throws us in America in the 20s and 30s with a tribute to the existential joy of living and the renewed carefree after overcoming the crisis of 1929.
The plot can be summarized in one sentence: "The effects that can have a freaked out aunt on the education of an innocent grandchild entrusted in custody."
The sprightly aunt will run over the life of his nephew Patrick, entrusted to him after the death of his brother as his only close relative, dragging him into a whirlwind of adventures, night raids, party extra luxury, the ups and downs of existence and teach until the maturity that you can learn more from a life lived intensely with veiled unconsciousness and a bit over the top that follow the strict rules of bourgeois education imparted by gray schools, prestigious but boriose and unifying.
It 'a pleasant reading not only for kids but for anyone who wants to travel with the imagination following the daring adventures of the crazy aunt that are regularly reported ironically sarcastic story from the grandson.
If you enjoyed this book, I suggest you also read "Around the World with Auntie Mame" in which the now elderly auntie involve in his bizarre lifestyle also the great-grandson (son of Patrick, the protagonist of the first book) that will be "taken away" to the family and tossed her into a romance intercontinental journey.
photos around the world
This sequel will become an opportunity to retrace the steps of an equally phantasmagoric adventure around the world - of which he had made only a vague hint in the first book - which years before had seen players Auntie Mame and her nephew Patrick ..... the History repeats .....
From the old Europe - starting with the Paris of the Belle Epoque the sparkling auntie will tread the boards of prestigious music hall with an improbable variety show, before moving to London where he manages to crash the English royal court, via Austria where she will foil Nazi plot -
she will reach the Soviet Union to found a ramshackle farm community Communist-inspired, finally all in the Middle East to give a happy ending to a love affair victim of cultural prejudices.
Maybe it's a little stereotypical choice of subjects of each chapter but it is still a cute collage of postcards from a world of yesteryear.
